Shelters: We are fortunate in the City of Blackwell by having a School
System that allows residents to take shelter on school property. If you don’t know
where is public shelter is located in your neighborhood, look at the map below, to locate the shelter closest to
you. The Fairgrounds and Hospital location are shown for reference only! They
are not public shelters. When possible, the request to open the shelters is made at least 30
minutes before a storm impacts Blackwell directly. Sometimes it’s not possible especially when
storms form near Blackwell. In addition, it should be noted that citizen volunteers usually are
the ones that open up the shelters with the Police Dept. as a backup. Those volunteers are very
much appreciated!
If you have a storm
shelter on your property, you can register that with the City of Blackwell, or make sure that a close friend or a
relative that lives out of town knows where your shelter is located in case you get trapped in your shelter by
debris. This way they can contact authorities if nobody hears from you after a severe weather
event in the City of Blackwell.
